This book honestly had me disappointed. Everyone keeps telling me how great it is and how it's one of the best books you'll ever read, but I've read better. It could have been worse but the media described it way differently.
I liked the characters: Katniss, Rue, Thresh, Gale and Haymitch. Suzanne, I think, didn't put much thought into Peeta's character. She made him seem like the incompetent love truck puppy. Basically the only thing he could really do was bake. She mentioned that he could lift heavy weights but there was really no scene where she showed he actually could. All I saw when I read the book was that Peeta is like a wounded dear or the damsel in distress, even before he was literally wounded. She made him seem too dependent and clingy to Katniss, which just backs up the point that he seemed incompetent.
I liked the plot, though it seemed like it could have been better. A few things that annoyed me was that it was pretty boring. Through most of the book nothing actually happened but when something did happen, then she'd rush through it, without enough description, and then suddenly all the important scenes happened right after each other, so by the time I finished chapter 17 I had a crippling headache.
I liked the part when they were choosing tributes and then they chose Prim, Katniss jumped up and volunteered to be in her place. That was when I actually liked Katniss. The scene actually showed that Katniss was the independent, responsible, bada** older sister that the author was trying to get us to visualize.
Suzanne's book honestly didn't really show me if the book was old fashioned or a bit modern. This had me confused because she made it seem like one city was made of too many cultures. At first, in the Seam it was old fashioned, like they were in the late 1800s. Then when they were chosen as tributes then it seemed modern. Then in the arena it was half and half but the projector part, where they show the faces of the dead tributes, made it seem quite modern again. Then there are the descriptions. In some scenes the author just rushed and in others she just gives us the extremely boring explanation.
Almost all the scenes in the arena were good, except two. When the announcement that two tributes could win if they were from the same district, Katniss went in pursuit of Peeta it was way too easy for her to find him. I think she should have met another tribute and fought with him or something exciting like that and then gotten to Peeta. Then there are the kissing parts, they just kiss at random moments and the kisses seemed almost pointless. Katniss keeps thinking that she actually has a thing for Peeta but then when she kisses him it's like there was no conflict inside her. I guess it's true that her life was in danger but she should have even thought about a few times.
Sorry, if you don't agree but this is my opinion.
